The construction of the castle was granted in 1271, in which King James I granted to Ponç Guillem de Vilafranca the farmsteads of Penella and Forminyà, assigned a territory between the domain of the castle of Alcoi and Penaguila, as well as permission to build in the rock of ‘Peniella’ a castle or tower.Situated just outside the town, in the Penella district. This castle was built in the XIII century. A tower is still seen and a rectangular shaped building, thought to be used as a defense and to guard the territory. Archaeological remains from other buildings have been conserved.
